Based on what you saw in the documentary film "Outfoxed" and what you know of ANY of the news networks WHY would any of them fail to report the news in a fair and balanced manner? Who does it serve to report with BIAS? Who does it hurt?
I think that controversial sells more. Their methodology to report is in sence the essence of who they are. Some news media outlets for example don't have the extra talk shows or documentary series and they keep to journalism by reporting what they get provided with by the Public Information Office of the respective entity. To report with BIAS it serves the media outlet presenting the information. In the case of Fox News it hurts the "target person" because people can formulate their opinion afterwards. Remember BIAS is the influence in an unfair way.
If news was "fair and balanced" news stations wouldnt have an audience to watch their station. In today's society people want to watch news they agree with bias. The type of news that Fox channel provided is more Republican so of course their audience is going to be more on the conversative side. Like the documentary said that the guests who they invited to their talk shows were people of weak influence and or never heartd of. When you have talk show hosts like Bill O'Reilly telling people to "shut up, your an idiot" the audience who agrees with his point of view is going agree with what he says. I agree with Jose Rocha above about reporting with bias benefits the media outlet and Fox News uses bias to hurt people who dont agree with their news. Kind of like throwing them into a colosseum with a full audience and not giving the target person a fighting chance
People who are hooked to the news usually have a favorite source from where they get their information from and it's due to the fact that they agree with certain point of views, values and ideas of that specific source. If the news stations reported in a manner of "fair and balanced" then they wouldn't have a main target audience to watch their station, everyone would just watch which ever t.v station was on at the time, read any newspaper, read any news website as well as listen to any radio station but they wouldn't be guarantee a specific audience and rating. Unfortunately by reporting the news in this way people who do not have the same beliefs as that of others often do get hurt because they are critized and basically picked on. I believe that the news will never be "fair and balanced".
Based on the film "Outfoxed", I agree with Reyes, they are a more conservative network. As long as the news is crushing anyone non-conservative they will report on it all day. I think all news networks are biased to a certain degree. They select their targeted group and scatter widespread beliefs to an audience. It's up to us, the viewers, to take or not to ake that information for face value. If we allow ourselves to take everything the news report for face value, we are in trouble. We will be the ones getting hurt in the end because all news is not true news. We have to be wise enough to sometimes research the source where the news is coming from to be able to make an intelligent decision...Is this news fact or fiction?
Why? simple, gossip and finger-pointhing sell more! And one has to keep in mind who the owner of a news-station is. Like a few above mentioned already people lok out for themselves first. Of course a republican-owned news-station is going to pick news that fit their own needs and agenda first. A very human thing to do. It hurts those that want to watch the news without caring, or picking a side in a neverending political struggle. Or simply those few that actually look for truth, and not someones oponions!
I believe that the news is biased to target certain groups and to attract certain people. Being biased creates controversy and many hot topics these days are very biased such as abortion and homosexual marriage among other issues happening in the United States. Without being biased there would be no controversy and I think the news would not be viewed as much as it is currently. By reporting in a fair and balance manner there really wouldn’t be a need to have other news networks because all networks would be broadcasting the same material in the same format. If you go through different news stations you hear the news but each station portrays the news in a different manner. Reporting biased information helps the network broadcasting the news because it keeps the people who view that network but hurts all viewers by not giving correct and accurate information. Like a puzzle we as viewers need to piece together by going from network to network.
Wow! bias is an under statement. I agree w/R.reyes, lucille and bertha in saying that Fox news is a conservative channel that do favor the Republicans but we also know there are other channels that are more liberal and favor the democrats. All channels to a certain degree will be bias because they are to make money at any cost and by taking that approach they forget that the important things is "INFORM". Mr Bosch has a point that we are human and each person on those channel are going to follow orders from who signs the check being a conservative or liberal side.
We are the new society that want answers. We look for that twich that will answer that question. The way Fox News is doing business according to the film is the way an enterprise moves to make their point and sell. The morals are left at the door, if you want to work there. Some may sell their morals to get the experience and move on. But, is like any other business out there, you must produce to move to the top. There are no lies there, it happens every where there are large corporations the only thing is that in Fox News does it to a grand scale.
If the news was not bias, people will question wether such news network is real or not. As a society we look for those controversial points, and we are willing to follow them and the network feeding us with it. The news networks are in the bussines of infroming ,entretaining, but above all MONEY. In order to make money the public needs to be "pointed in the right direction" therefore bias is the perfect tool.
Bias news, hurts all of us. If people do not take the time to make their own opinion and express it, the only thing we are doing is re-enforcing the views of the network owners. If we do that we have no right to complaint, and we get stuck with our leaders, the way the world looks at us and the way our society evolves.
The television networks can not be anything but biased. They target a certain type of audience and they want to make sure that they satisfy the needs and wants of that audience. When you take Fox news for example and based on the documentary we saw, they are obligated report the kind of news that they do. First because of who their big boss is and second because of who is paying their bills. It doesn't hurt them in any way. Who does it hurt? well people on the other side of the road. Those hard core republicans will enjoy a network such as Fox. A hard core liberal would rather take offense in some of the things that they report. Fair and balanced news is not an easy task for any of the networks. some try but it is still possible for the viewers to determine which side they are leaning on most. I do agree with most of the comments posted by the others but my question is what can we and must we do about that situation. After all we all are responsible for this kind of reporting because we each choose a favorite channel to watch the news based on our beliefs and the kind of reporting by this specific network.
The press if so free they can distort the facts. They fail to report the news in a fair manner because it serves the two ideologies of conservatism and liberalism. Which happens to be the foundation of the two strongest political parties in this country. It serves the owners of these networks and the political parties they endorse. The loosers in all this are the the people seeking the truth; you and me.
The news targets certain people that have come accustumed to believing everything they hear. The news is directed more for entertainment then for facts. Each news station is owned by either conservitive or liberal, so they focus on that party. Those owners don't want fair and balanced, they have an agenda to keep and noone fights against this because they are the ones with the prestige and money. This way of thinking hurts the majority of people. Most of societies views come from watching these bias shows and they have no clue they are not getting the true facts. They never tell there sources when giving information and always have someone that is week on a subject to talk too.
In my opinion, its simple! Controversy, lies, scandals, etc. sell more then the simple truth does...It's better and easier to point fingers and place the blame elsewhere then to stick to one story, or simply place the blame where it belongs. We have only but ourselves to blame because we are attracted by these sources.
Must news networks are full of inaccuracy and distortion on the information that is being broadcasted, failing to report with a fair balance manner on issues so important like the number of unreported problems with our troops in Iraq; do to a lock from the government on the information that can be given to the public and the ones that can not be give. Reporters that are bias to a type of news or issues are more likely force to do it by the network from where they are working for, but on many other cases they agree with it and at the same time they are getting pay for it. This problem will hurt those individuals who can be persuasive and have not a good education and their decisions can change with only a few new ideas from the news.
I think that the press has too much freedom. They shouldn't be allowed to say whatever they want, but what IS. You give these hyenas too much leverage and they'll print anything. The government should pay closer attention to how these people abuse their freedom of speech. Damn "democracy" can in some aspects be worse than communism. In many ways, the media rules what the millions that make up USA beleive, know, and think. Should we really let them print and say whatever they want...
Everybody wants a piece of the cake. I think that some networks have their own agenda. They have friends in higher places which may help the network financially or might help them with favors. That's why I believe that every politician has a tail to step on and they all cover their tail. A favor here another favor there. The ones that get hurt due to bias news are the people (society).
I do agree with Rocha saying morals are out the door. Some but not all will do anything to get to the top not considering at what cost. I just thinki like rocha said Fox new does to another level and making it clear to their employees if you dont like it, there is the door. that why most of the individual that spoke were former employees and some maintain their identities unknown. Bosch said another thing that made sense. Why dont News have a regulation that if the news are not true or bias then should not be aired but then again new will not sell
I want to start by saying that I feel the documentary in itself was bias in what it was trying to promote about FOX. It was clear that all of the speakers involved in the documentary seemed to have been scorned by Fox in one way or another. Yes the Fox channel is all the way to the "right" but this documentary can be taken for being all the way to the "left". Special note that no other media was really mentioned, ex. CNN, AOL, MSNBC, etc.
News networks in general don't give fair and balanced information probably because of fear of not engaging viewers or not receiving financial backing from organizations that support their network.
Bias news hurts individuals that don't know any better, don't research information, and basically buy in to whatever they hear. Bias news is positive for all networks/organizations that make money from information that is being fed to the public.
there is always going to be two sides to the story, and obviously like it has been said before bias sells. It is up to us to either watch it or turn it off. The good thing about this country is that we can say what we want to say, but we can also choose what we want to watch.
The reason WHY is that these news stations are privately owned and the owners are out to push their own political views on others. I'm sure this is not the only "news" station to do this. This method of "news" reporting hurts anyone who watches it. Whether you agree with them or not.
The news will say whatever it has to but its come to the point where i don't believe anything the news has to say. For example, if the news has footage of someone committing a crime they loop the seen hundreds of time. Along with the looping of these videos is the made up and exaggerated story that the owner of the news company ads to it. The stories are made to get more viewers.
I dont think its possible to give news in a "fair and balanced" manner. News channels are owned by someone, and this person has his or her own ideals, moral, ways of thinking! But also, maybe this person's ideals, morals, ways of thinking are up for sale to the highest bidder. These are things that affect what it is what we see on t.v. The only people benfitting from biased news are a few opposed to those who are affected, which are million of people basing their decisions in half truths half lies.
It is not possible to give news in a fair and balanced manner because the news puts a twist on it. They only say what they want to hear. All news stations are owned by someone and the only thing that matters is how that individual perceives things. I think that bias news end up hurting many of the people that are watching those particular news which half of the time those news are not real.
Based on the documentary Outfoxed it says to me that Dictatorship is alive and well in the news networks. I never would imagine that a network could be so one sided and so obviuos. It should even be call a news network.
What happened to the days when we looked forward to watching the 6:00 news? There were many unbiased networks that got your attention. You could actually watch the news as a family. But now, it's boring, biased, and unfounded. Today, according to statistics, MSNBC and CNN and NBC are the most biased network stations out there. Everything is from the perspective of the network instead of the news being presented as facts. It all must meet then needs of that particular network and not meet the needs of the public. When I watch the news, I want to hear the what is happening in the world and my society. Not just hear what the owner of the network wants everyone to know.
I agree with mmartinez in so much as we can choose what news media we want to watch. Of course we can also make the decision if what is being televised is biased and untrue.
I also agree with grace toledo that what the public actually wants to see and hear are stories about scandal, lies, and controversy. We are all guilty of looking forward to watching these stories. It's the same as people who are "gawkers" at a car accident scene. We are all attracted to excitement whether it is about the truth, lies, death, etc.
I thought I had already posted a comment in this post but I guess I will have to agree with Grace...that the public does want to see stories about scandal, lies, and controversy. Everyone chooses what to watch weather the scenes are controversial or not people are attracted to watch real life drama. We are all attracted to excitement whether it is about the violence it portrays.
I think that controversial sells more. Their methodology to report is in sence the essence of who they are.
